Unique Student Identifier (USI)


Whether you are a school leaver, are on a Working Holiday visa, looking to enter into the hospitality industry or your paper RSA or RCG  certificate is expiring, YOU you will need to apply for a USI.

Its FREE and is a one off application that will only takes 5 minutes to complete online. Once you have your number you will use this for any other vocational courses that you may study in the future .

A USI is for life! You only have to create it once.

If you have undertaken training since 2015, you probably have a USI.

You will need to provide identification to create a USI.

What is the USI ?

A Unique Student Identifier (USI) is a reference number made up of numbers and/or letters that will stay with you for life and will need to be be recorded with any nationally recognised Vocational Education Training courses that you undertake from January 2015.​

Below is a detailed ‘Step by Step’ guide in setting up your Unique Student Identifier of which you will need when completing a Nationally recognised course anywhere in Australia.

This is a one off application and only takes 2-3 minutes to complete online. Once you have your number you will use this for any other courses that you may study.


Step 1: Make sure you have one of the following documentation (preferably 2 just in case) as it will be required in setting up:

  • Driver’s Licence
  • Medicare Care (includes family Medicare card)
  • Australian Passport
  • Visa (with Non-Australia Passport)
  • Birth Certificates (Australian)
  • Certificate of Registration by Descent
  • Citizenship Certificate
  • ImmiCard (includes EIS, PRE, RDI)

Step 2: Click the following link to set up your USI.

Step 3: Agree to the Terms and Conditions

Step 4: Fill in your personal and contacts details

Step 4.b: The personal details that are required are:

  • Your name
  • Your gender
  • Your date of birth and where you were born
  • Country in which you’re studying

Step 4.c: Method of contacts can be through one of the following:

  • Email
  • Mobile Phone
  • Mailing address

The reason for contact purposes is for

  • To send a link to activate your USI account
  • Advise any changes to a change of details of your USI account
  • Reset and advise of a new password if requested
  • Respond to enquiries and request from you

Step 5: Fill out the requested details as shown in the ID

Step 6: Set up the password and security question for your USI account.

Step 7: USI will be displayed on the screen. Please write down the USI number somewhere safe where it can be safely kept and easy to access.

Step 8: The USI will be sent to the chosen preferred method (Email, phone or posted)

Step 9: Please enter the USI in the enrolment form of the booking cart or bring it to the course if you have already enrolled. Without this number we cannot issue your certificate.
